Picture this: You have some delicious ground beef in the fridge at home that you plan to make into hamburgers for dinner tonight. You stop at the grocery store on the way home for some toppings and hamburger buns (Martin’s buns, of course). You arrive at the bread aisle and take a look at all of the Martin’s rolls that you can buy: Big Marty’s, Sandwich Rolls, 12-Sliced Slider Rolls, Whole Wheat 12-Sliced Slider Rolls… Your job just got a bit more difficult.
Is the Big Marty’s roll too big for my burger patties? What is the size difference between a 12-Sliced Slider Roll and a Dinner Roll? How can a bun be both 100% Whole Wheat and Potato?
Don’t worry. Before you find yourself at a loss for which bun to buy, we’ve got an expert’s guide for the best Martin’s products to buy for all kinds of meals, burgers, and sandwiches, so you can be fully prepared for your next grocery trip!

If you’re looking for a roll for your sandwich, our Sandwich Rolls are the obvious choice. They’ve got plenty of surface area for all your sandwich toppings. If you’re looking for a smaller size sandwich roll for a lunch or appetizers, check out our 12-Sliced Slider Rolls, which also come in whole wheat version! There are also a couple of options if you’d prefer a smaller tea-sandwich size—both our Dinner Rolls or Party Rolls would be great (just remember that neither comes pre-sliced).
If you’d prefer sliced bread for your sandwich, you can’t go wrong with our standard Potato Bread. However, the Butter Bread is also a delicious choice, particularly for grilled sandwiches due to its buttery taste. Additionally, if you’re looking to add more grains to your diet, then our 100% Whole Wheat Potato Bread is the way to go. Our wheat bread is remarkably soft, making it a satisfying and healthy alternative. (If you’re looking for a more interesting and sweet addition to your sandwich, try any of our swirl breads! They complement both savory and sweet toppings perfectly!)

To decide on which hamburger bun to use, first think about the size of the burger, chicken patty, veggie burger, etc. If your protein is about 4oz, our Sandwich Rolls will be perfect. If you’re cooking up more than 4oz for one burger/sandwich, reach for our Big Marty’s Rolls. If you’re looking to make a slider with about 3oz of meat or another protein, our 12-Sliced Slider Rolls are probably your best bet. Got something less than 3oz? Keep reading for our slider section below.

P.S. If you’re craving a truly monster burger, you can find a number of restaurants making ½-lb creations (or larger) on our institutional 4-inch and 5-inch Potato Rolls!
FAQ: What is an institutional product? Institutional products are those that are only available for restaurant use and are not available for retail sale.

Martin’s has a bun for just about any size slider. Our 12-Sliced Slider Rolls (which come in potato or whole wheat potato) are perfect for about a 3oz protein, like turkey burgers, hamburgers, or veggie burgers. The Dinner Rolls can hold about the same or slightly smaller protein. And, if you’re looking for a bite-size slider, reach for our Party Potato Rolls. Just remember that the Dinner Rolls and Party Rolls do not come pre-sliced.
Barbecues and Grilling?
If you’re grilling up some burgers or sliders, refer to those sections above. If you’re making pulled pork, ribs, or another saucy barbecue meat, you’re probably going to want to choose a larger bun, like our Big Marty’s or Sandwich Rolls to have enough room for plenty of meat and sauce. And, of course, if you’re making hot dogs or sausages, our Long Rolls are the perfect choice.
If you’re hosting a barbecue, you might want to try making your own Hot Dog Bar or Hamburger Bar, so each guest can choose the roll they prefer.
Hot Dogs/Subs/Long Sandwiches?

We have two great options for long subs and sandwiches: our Long Potato Rolls and our Hoagie Rolls. When choosing between the two, keep in mind that the Long Potato Rolls are about 2 ½ inches shorter, so if you’re looking for a hefty sandwich, try the Hoagie Rolls. Also, the Long Potato Rolls are made out of our classic potato dough, while the Hoagie Rolls are a white dough, so it might just come down to your preference!
Okay, we admit, this is a little bit of a trick question, because basically any of the Martin’s products can be used for breakfast in one way or another! First things first, our swirl breads make a perfect companion to any breakfast dish just with some toasting and buttering. But they also make great French toast! Any of the regular sandwich breads can also be used for French toast, breakfast casseroles, or breakfast sandwiches.
As far as rolls go, any product can be used to make a delicious breakfast sandwich or breakfast boat (which you could even make ahead of time and freeze for later). If you need some recipe inspiration, try these Hoagie Breakfast Boats or these Stuffed Breakfast Sliders.

While just about all of our products could find a place at a dinner party, there are a few that work particularly well. First up is the most obvious choice, our Dinner Rolls. They’re perfect as a side just the way they are or with an upgrade like this Cranberry-Orange Dinner Roll Glaze.
And remember that our Potatobred Stuffing is a perfect addition for a delicious casserole, bread pudding, or classic stuffing dish. Try whipping up this simple but delightful Chicken Cordon Bleu Casserole.
If you’re still not sure what product you’re looking for, keep reading for a complete breakdown of each of Martin’s products, by dough type.
The majority of our products are made from our classic potato dough, which is essentially a combination of potato flour and wheat flour mixed with the rest of the dough ingredients (milk, sugar, yeast, etc.). It’s also important to note that we use all high-quality ingredients in all of our bread and roll products: high-protein wheat flour, real milk, and real butter. The result is a plush, slightly-sweet bread or roll that compliments both savory and sweet toppings!
FAQ: Are Martin’s Potato Bread and Rolls gluten free? No. Since our bread and rolls are made with both potato flour and wheat flour, they are not gluten free.
Martin’s makes two different hamburger buns for purchase at the grocery store: Big Marty’s and Sandwich Rolls. Our Sandwich Rolls are made with our signature potato dough and are slightly smaller than the Big Marty’s. They also have a special “hinge” on the back that helps keep your sandwich together even after you’ve stuffed it with your favorite toppings. For the last several years, this bun has been named the #1 Branded Hamburger Bun in America, according to IRI sales data! And our friends at America’s Test Kitchen agree, it is a crowd-pleaser!
Martin’s has a bun for all slider size preferences. Only slightly smaller than the Sandwich Roll, our 12-Sliced Roll is the obvious choice for a slider. It is conveniently pre-sliced and, despite being smaller, can still fit sufficient enough toppings for a packed lunch or reduced portion sandwich for dinner.
One size down are our Dinner Rolls, measuring ½-inch less in diameter than the 12-Sliced Slider. This product is perfect as a side for casual or formal dinners. This bun can also make a great slider roll, but remember that this one does not come pre-sliced.
The Party Potato Roll is Martin’s smallest (and cutest!) bun. Measuring just 2” in diameter, these rolls are perfect for charcuterie boards, kid-sized sandwiches, or appetizer platters at a dinner party! (Note: this bun also does not come pre-sliced). Try placing two sliced sheets of Party Rolls with your desired fillings in a casserole dish to make delicious pull-apart sandwiches.
This holiday favorite is made from cubed Martin’s Potato Bread and doesn’t include any added ingredients, making it incredibly versatile for bread puddings, casseroles and more.
FAQ: How is Martin’s Potatobred Stuffing made? When we bake our Potatobred Stuffing, it is taken off the regular potato bread line right before it is sliced into standard slices. Instead, it is placed by hand into a separate slicer that turns it into cubes! Fun fact: there are about 1 ¾ loaves of Potato Bread in a bag of Potatobred Stuffing!
There is no better pairing for a hot dog than Martin’s Long Potato Rolls. Made with our signature potato dough, they’re also a great size, shape, and taste for brats, lobster rolls or even miniature hoagies!
Martin’s Potato Bread is our signature potato dough baked in a loaf pan and sliced to make the perfect sandwich bread. This classic product is perfect for any sandwich and contains 4g of protein in every slice!
Cinnamon-Raisin Swirl Potato Bread was the first swirl bread Martin’s released. This classic, cinnamon-y sweet bread is delicious right out of the bag, like all our swirl breads. But, it’s also great toasted with butter or made into bread pudding.
FAQ: Are the swirl bread loaves smaller than the sandwich breads? Yes. The swirl breads have less slices, so the overall size of the loaf is smaller.
Martin’s Cinnamon-Sugar Swirl Potato Bread is perfect for anyone looking for a sweet breakfast bread that doesn’t have raisins. It’s our classic potato bread with swirls of cinnamon sugar baked in—a perfect way to wake up, for sure.
The Maple Brown Sugar Swirl Potato Bread is a crowd favorite among the swirl breads. It also has a slightly thicker slice, making it perfect for French toast or even a savory breakfast sandwich, like this one.
Because of our use of better ingredients like real milk and sugar, Martin’s white dough products are a flavorful and high-quality version of traditional white bread. Try using any of the below products for your sandwiches, burgers, subs, and more.
The Big Marty’s are slightly taller and wider than Sandwich Rolls, and are covered in sesame seeds. And, by covered, we mean covered. Our Big Marty’s are known and loved for their thick coating of sesame seeds! Check out the recipes that use Big Marty’s Rolls in this Burger of the Month Series in Rachael Ray Every Day Magazine.
Martin’s Old-Fashioned Real Butter Bread joined our product line-up in 2017 as Martin’s version of the classic white bread. In this bread, we do not use any oils—only real butter (hence the name “Butter Bread”), making it perfect for grilled cheese and delicious right out of the bag!
Due to their large size, Martin’s Hoagie Rolls are multi-functional and perfect for dishes like meatball subs and cheesesteaks. You can also slice up this roll for bite-size appetizers, like our Bocadillo Bites recipe above!
Since our Old-Fashioned Real Butter Bread has been such a hit for the past several years, we decided to make it the base of this Cinnamon-Raisin Butter Bread. With this bread, you get all the butteriness of the Butter Bread paired with the sweetness of cinnamon and raisins—a perfect combination!
Whole Wheat Potato Dough
Our 100% whole wheat bread and rolls are the perfect combination of soft and sweet potato dough and nutritious whole wheat dough. That’s why it’s called “whole wheat potato” rolls/bread, and that’s also why it’s soft and supple, like our potato dough products. We bake both a whole wheat bun and bread loaf, so you can have a 100% whole wheat alternative to any sandwich, panini, or breakfast dish you’d like to make!
Our 100% Whole Wheat Potato Bread is perfect for anyone who prefers the nutrition of wheat bread, but still enjoys the softness of potato bread. Our wheat bread is the best of both worlds, making it a great vessel for paninis and deli sandwiches.
Our 12-Sliced Whole Wheat Potato Rolls are another great choice for your sliders, particularly if you’d like a healthier element. They’re the same size as the classic 12-Sliced Rolls, but have 13g of whole grains per serving! As Martin’s only whole wheat bun, this slider roll is definitely worth a try!
