Copycat Recipe #1: Chargrilled Burger

Behold the royal nature of this iconic burger, famous for its flame-grilled patty and a simple yet satisfying combination of fresh lettuce, tomatoes, mayonnaise, ketchup, pickles, and onions on a sesame seed bun. Its signature cooking method imparts an unmistakable smoky flavor that’s fit for a king.

The key to achieving this burger’s quintessential chargrilled look and smoky taste is to grill it on a charcoal or gas grill; however if you don’t have access to outdoor cooking methods, a cast iron grill pan is your best bet. Once the burger is nicely charred, serve on a Martin’s Big Marty’s Roll with your favorite toppings and a side of thick-cut French fries or crispy onion rings!

Follow our recommended directions below!

What You’ll Need

  • 4 Martin’s Big Marty’s Rolls
  • 1 Pound Ground Beef
  • Iceberg Lettuce, hand-torn
  • White Onion, sliced
  • Dill Pickle Chips
  • Tomato, sliced
  • Mayonnaise, to taste
  • Ketchup, to taste
  • Salt, to taste
  • Pepper, to taste

The Method

Cook Patties: Preheat a seasoned grill pan to medium high heat. Divide the ground beef into four ¼-pound balls. Shape into thin patties and season with salt and pepper. Place the seasoned patties on the hot grill pan and cook until bottom is well-charred. Flip and continue grilling until the other side is well-charred.

Build Burger: Meanwhile, spread mayonnaise and ketchup onto the tops and bottoms of each Big Marty’s Roll. Place the cooked burger patties onto the bottom half of each Big Marty’s Roll and top with pickles, onions, lettuce, and tomato slices. Add ketchup and mayonnaise. Cover with the top half of each Big Marty’s Roll and enjoy!

Copycat Recipe #2: Double Cheeseburger with Grilled Onions and Secret Sauce

Experience a taste of the sunny West Coast with this double-layered cheeseburger, hailing from a state known for its golden beaches, palm trees, and movie stars. This burger is lavishly dressed with a zesty secret sauce, sweet caramelized onions, melted cheese, and an extra kick of tangy mustard. It’s a tribute to a beloved fast-food gem, famous for its adventurous and unique style.

This secret menu item, often known as “animal style,” is one you won’t want to miss! With its mustard-grilled patties, griddled onions, and a Thousand Island-esque spread, this double-meat-double-cheese smash burger is a longtime fan favorite! Serve it on a Martin’s Sandwich Potato Roll with a side of “animal-style” fries for a true red carpet experience!

Follow our recommended directions below!

What You’ll Need

  • 2 Martin’s Sandwich Potato Rolls
  • 1 Pound Ground Beef
  • Beefsteak Tomato, thick sliced
  • Iceberg Lettuce
  • 4 Slices American Cheese
  • 1 Onion, diced
  • 1 Tablespoon Cooking Oil
  • 1/3 Cup Mayonnaise
  • 2 Tablespoons Sweet Relish
  • 2 Tablespoons Ketchup
  • 1 Teaspoon Sugar
  • 2 Teaspoons White Vinegar
  • 1 Dash Worcestershire Sauce
  • Salt and Pepper, to taste
  • Dijon Mustard, for serving
  • Dill Pickle Chips, for serving

The Method

Caramelize Onions: Dice the onion and sauté with olive oil in a medium sized pan over medium-high heat. Deglaze the pan with small amounts of water as it evaporates. Repeat this process for 20 minutes or until the onions are caramelized. Set caramelized onions aside.

Prepare Sauce: Meanwhile, in a small mixing bowl, combine the mayonnaise, sweet relish, ketchup, sugar, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix until smooth. Set aside.

Cook Patties: Divide the ground beef into four ¼-pound balls. Place between parchment paper and pound until the patties are very thin and slightly larger than rolls. Salt and pepper both sides to taste. Place 2 patties side by side in a preheated cast iron pan. Allow to cook for 2-3 minutes until they are a dark, caramelized brown. Top the uncooked side of the patties with mustard before flipping. Flip patties and allow to cook for 1-2 more minutes. Place cheese slices on each patty and allow to melt. Repeat with remaining patties.

Build Burger: Spread softened butter onto Martin’s Sandwich Potato Rolls. Toast Rolls on medium-high heat until golden-brown and crispy. Remove from heat and set on a plate. Spread prepared burger sauce on the bottom half of each Martin’s Sandwich Potato Roll. Top with pickles, tomato, lettuce, first patty, caramelized onions, second patty, and top bun. Enjoy!

Copycat Recipe #3: Classic Burger Sliders

Burger Sliders

These tiny, square-shaped burgers are a cult favorite. Each one is steam-grilled over a bed of finely chopped onions, served with pickles and optional melted cheese on soft, fluffy buns. These sliders are a nod to a legendary locale whose imagery resembles that of a quaint, medieval fortress.

This modern remake, of the original “sliders” that first coined the term, gets a noble upgrade with Martin’s Sweet Dinner Potato Rolls. Serve up one, two, three, or a whole dozen, to enjoy on your own or share with a crowd. Dress them up however you like—with cheese, condiments, and other fixings, and enjoy every bite-sized delight!

Follow our recommended directions below!

What You’ll Need

  • 12 Martin’s Sweet Dinner Rolls, sliced in half horizontally
  • 1 Pound Ground Beef
  • 2 Large Yellow Onions, finely chopped
  • 1/3 Cup Dehydrated Onions
  • ¼ Cup Water
  • 12 Slices American Cheese (optional)
  • Dill Pickle Chips
  • Ketchup, to taste
  • Mustard, to taste
  • Salt, to taste
  • Pepper, to taste

The Method

Shape Patties: Press the ground beef into a 9” x 13” baking pan to shape it into an even layer. Add salt and pepper to taste. Cut beef into 12 even squares. Using a straw, the end of a chopstick, or a similar tool, create five holes in each patty. Set off to the side.

Tip: It sometimes helps to chill the beef for a few minutes first before cutting into squares and creating the holes.

Cook Onions: Meanwhile, add half of the chopped onions, the dehydrated onions, and the water to a large skillet over medium high heat and cook for 5-7 minutes. Then, stir in the remaining chopped raw onions. Spread the onions out evenly, covering the entire bottom of the pan.

Cook Patties: Arrange the burger patties in a single layer over top of the onions. (Note: if you can’t cook all twelve patties at once, then reserve half of the combined onion mixture to use with the second batch of patties.) Cover the pan and allow the patties to steam until the tops are fully cooked. Add small incremental amounts of water to the pan if needed.

Steam Rolls: Top each cooked patty with the top halves of Martin’s Sweet Dinner Rolls. Put the bottom half of the bun atop the top halves, cut side down. Allow buns to steam until warm.

Build Burgers: To remove burgers from pan, pick up the bottom bun, slide a flat spatula under a patty to pick it up—onions, top bun, and all—and place spatula on lower buns to carefully slide burger onto the lower bun. Repeat with the remaining sliders.
