The Perfect Hot Dog Bun Elements

We’ve already discussed the qualities that make Martin’s Potato Rolls an exceptional burger bun. Now, let’s dive into how these elements specifically enhance your hot dog experience. Whether it’s the bun’s structure or its absorbency, Martin’s Long Potato Rolls make every hot dog a standout. For more details on our burger buns, check out our earlier blog here.

Hinge Design

What’s a hot dog bun without a hinge? This unique design of Martin’s Long Potato Rolls ensures your hot dog and all its toppings stay perfectly in place, making for a mess-free and enjoyable eating experience.

Tip: We also produce a top-sliced version of our Long Potato Rolls for foodservice use that is perfect for lobster rolls!

Softness

The soft and squishy nature of Martin’s Long Potato Rolls adds a delightful contrast to the crisp or charred texture of a hot dog. Their tender crumb makes each bite a delight. For more crunch, consider adding diced onions or fresh pickle relish to your hot dog!

Resilience

Martin’s Long Potato Rolls won’t crumble under pressure! With their robust build, they are perfect for hearty hot dogs. The bun springs back after being pressed, ensuring it retains its shape and delivers a reliable eating experience.

Aesthetic Appeal

The visual appeal of a hot dog can elevate the entire dining experience. Martin’s Long Potato Rolls offer a beautiful golden color and a consistent shape, making your hot dog presentation not only appetizing but also eye-catching for any occasion.

Subtle Sweetness

The delicate sweetness of Martin’s Long Potato Rolls perfectly complements the savory flavors of a hot dog, creating a delightful taste combination that enhances every bite. For instance, with our featured recipe, the sweetness of the roll mirrors that of the crab meat, both of which provide excellent balance to the salty hot dog and savory mac and cheese.

Absorbency

Martin’s Long Potato Rolls are uniquely designed to handle juicy toppings and condiments. Their excellent absorbency ensures that the bun maintains its integrity, providing a satisfying and mess-free eating experience. No soggy buns here!

Variety of Sizes

In addition to our standard 5¾” Long Potato Rolls, Martin’s also offers 8¼” Hoagie Rolls, which are perfect for sausages, bratwurst, meatball subs, and hoagies! View our Product Comparison Sheet to see a side-by-side comparison.

Hot Dog Preparation Guide

There are so many different techniques for preparing hot dogs! Some of our favorite methods are grilling, pan-frying, air frying, and roasting over a campfire. However, in a pinch, hot dogs can also be boiled, pressure-cooked, oven-baked, or even microwaved!

Bonus: Specialty Hot Dog Techniques

Earn extra points with your guests by trying the following unique hot dog preparations that create more surface area to allow for more chargrilled flavor!

  1. Split-Cut Hot Dogs: Butterfly your hot dogs by cutting a vertical slit through the entire length of the hot dog, being careful not to cut all the way through. This enables you to grill your hot dog on both the flat side and the rounded side and also creates a little well for condiments and toppings when it is served. (Instructions)
  2. Cross-Hatched Hot Dogs: Score your hot dogs in a cross-hatch pattern by making shallow diagonal slits down the length of the hot dog, first in one direction, then in the other. This technique works especially well when paired with marinades such as BBQ sauce, as it allows for the flavor to penetrate the inside of the hot dog for more depth of flavor. (Instructions)
  3. Spiral-Cut Hot Dogs: Start by sticking a skewer lengthwise through the center of your hot dog. Next, starting about ½” down from the top of your hot dog, begin cutting a continuous diagonal slit along the full length of the hot dog, rotating as you go, stopping about ½” from the bottom. You should end up with a corkscrew- or spring-shaped hot dog. Grill the hot dog with the skewer in place, then remove it prior to serving. This method optimizes the surface area of your hot dog to create more crispy edges. (Instructions)

Bun Preparation Guide

As we’ve said before, “It’s All About the Bun!” The bun you choose can make or break your meal. Similarly, the way you prepare the bun can make a big difference in the outcome of the dish. Level up your hot dog experience even further with one of these two premium bun preparations:

  1. Steamed: This method is perfect if you want a soft and moist bun to complement a charred or crispy hot dog. Try any of the below options:
    1. If pan-frying your hot dogs, place a bun upside down over each hot dog during the last minute of cooking. You can also add a touch of water to the pan and cover it with a lid to help them steam.
    2. Place the buns in a steaming basket over boiling water.
    3. Boil a pot of water and use tongs to hold the buns over the steam for 30-60 seconds.
    4. Wrap the buns in a damp paper towel and microwave for 10-15 seconds.
  2. Grilled/Toasted: This technique is great for adding additional texture and flavor to your hot dog. You can choose to enhance the buns with butter, mayo, or oil, or simply toast them dry. Choose from one of the below methods:
    1. Open the buns and place them cut-side down on the upper rack of the grill while your hot dogs finish cooking. Be sure to check them frequently as they can brown in as little as 30-60 seconds.
    2. Toast the buns in your oven or toaster oven on 350°F for about 5 minutes or until golden-brown.
    3. Open the buns and lay them cut-side down (butter optional) on a frying pan or griddle and toast until lightly browned, about 1-2 minutes over medium-low heat.

Testimonials and Reviews

Now, of course we know our rolls are great! But don’t just take our word for it. Here’s what people are saying about Martin’s Potato Rolls when it comes to hot dogs:

“Martin’s Long Potato Rolls have the perfect blend of flexibility and strength. They’re chewy and soft (never crumbly), which make for an excellent hot dog hammock. The flavor was also there — not too sweet, but sweet enough to complement all the salty flavors of a hot dog and condiments.

“These buns also got super high marks for staying soft after a few hours of air exposure, and were even still usable a few days after opening them. (A lot can happen to enriched processed bread the moment you expose it to air, even if it’s just to take out a single bun. But these held up well!)”

“Not only does Martin[’s] take the cake for best mass-produced potato bread, but it also steals the crown for best overall hot dog bun. Martin’s potato rolls are heavenly soft, which gives hot dogs a deeply satisfying bite. These potato rolls also feature a pleasant springiness that can handle extra drippings or condiments without any serious risk of sogginess or full-on collapse.

“These buns also have an incredible flavor in addition to an impressive texture, which bumps them a notch above other competitors. Martin’s potato rolls contain the perfect mixture of salty sweetness to them. These rolls have a calculated balance of ingredients that are truly remarkable, and that harmony of flavors is what makes Martin’s potato rolls truly exceptional.

“While other hot dog buns tend to lack flavor and (in the worst cases) even moisture, these potato rolls have a rich taste and pleasant butteriness to them. You could honestly use these buns to make just about any kind of sandwich you can think of, and they’d blow any other mass-produced bun on the market out of the water. When you want a first-rate bun for your hot dog, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a bun that’s as accessible and tasty as Martin’s potato rolls.”
