Hot sauce is a favorite condiment for anyone who loves a bit of heat. Whether you enjoy it splashed over a popular finger food, sprinkled across a savory breakfast platter, or drenched over a chicken sandwich, hot sauce (especially Buffalo sauce) is on most spicy food-lovers’ lists of go-to toppings.
But where exactly did “Buffalo” sauce originate?
A Brief History:
As with many famous “origin stories,” the history of the buffalo wing is often disputed; but one thing is certain—it was first invented in Buffalo, New York. In the 1960s, chicken wings were not a popular food item; they were mainly used in stocks or otherwise discarded. While the specific details differ here, the story goes that a restaurant owner had an excess of chicken wings and hungry mouths to feed, so she came up with the idea of deep-frying them and coating in a hot pepper-butter-cayenne based sauce. This dish soon became very popular in the New York area, and was adopted by other restaurants and bars as well.
Today, Buffalo wings are a popular snack nationwide, particularly as a tailgating and sports-watching appetizer. The Buffalo-style sauce used most commonly for these wings can now be enjoyed in a wide variety of flavors and varying levels of heat. It is also used in a number of other dishes, from boneless chicken tenders, to dips and pizza.
