Taco Grilled Cheese

Next Monday, September 6, 2021, marks the unofficial end of summer. Labor Day, which was first observed in New York City in 1882 before becoming a federal holiday in 1894, is dedicated to all the working men and women in the United States for their contributions to society. The holiday—and accompanying three day weekend—serves as a welcome interlude from the busyness of work.

Labor Day, which occurs annually on the first Monday in September, is often celebrated with picnics, parades, cookouts, and public gatherings. It also symbolizes the “unofficial” end of summer and a transition into fall’s back-to-school season.

In continuation of our holiday grilled cheese series, and staying true to the theme of Labor Day, we’re bringing you a fun and easy Taco Grilled Cheese! The simple-to-master recipe incorporates only a handful of ingredients and can be prepared in under 30 minutes. It’s perfect for busy weeknights and lazy Sundays alike.

To all of the working men and women in our country—from lawyers and doctors to stay-at-home-parents—this one’s for you. Thank you for all you do!

Our Labor Day Grilled Cheese is the opposite of laborious—with five basic ingredients, you can whip up this recipe for a family of four in under half an hour. What’s even better is using leftovers from your weekly taco night, turning this into a no-fuss 5-minute meal!

Let’s take a closer look at how to prepare this recipe:

Taco Grilled Cheese

The Taco Meat

Transform “Taco Tuesday” into “Work Less Wednesday.” This easy-peasy recipe is best prepared using leftover taco meat, meaning all you have to do is reheat and serve! But just in case you don’t have anything prepared, the process is simple:

Step 1: Prepare Ground Beef

Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add beef to skillet and cook until brown. Drain. Add taco seasoning and water. Cook until liquid is reduced in half or less.

(Tip: if you don’t have a packet of premixed taco seasoning, try using a blend of spices including chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, paprika, salt, and cayenne pepper.)

The Grilled Cheese

Now it’s time to build your sandwich showstopper:

Step 2

Heat a skillet over medium-low heat. Butter the bread and place face-down on the skillet. Top with shredded cheese, taco beef, more shredded cheese, and another slice of bread, buttered side up.

Step 3

Cook sandwiches until golden brown and the cheese is melted, flipping halfway through, about 2-3 minutes.

The Toppings

Make your family dinner customizable with optional taco toppings to add to your creation:

Step 4

Slice in half and serve warm with desired toppings like sour cream, guacamole, tomatoes, green onion, lettuce, or cilantro.
