Next week, millions of Americans will celebrate the nation’s 245th Independence Day with fireworks and banners, parades and parties, barbecues, picnics, and plenty of star-spangled apparel. On top of all the festivities, why not plan your party food to match?
Amidst your typical burgers, hot dogs, and barbecue food, be sure to make room for colorful snacks and lunch options that keep the party going all summer long!
This week’s blog is a continuation of our Holiday Grilled Cheese series. We present to you our July 4th Grilled Cheese: Tomato, Mozzarella, and Blueberry Balsamic Grilled Cheese! This celebration of summer includes farm-fresh flavors, gooey cheese, and a trio of colors from our country’s flag.

Featured Recipe: Tomato, Mozzarella, and Blueberry Balsamic Grilled Cheese
As the recipe title suggests, this patriotic sandwich is made up of three primary elements, each one a representative color of the U.S.A. While the ingredients themselves might seem simple, the meaning behind each color has great significance. Learn more below!
The Red: Juicy Ripe Tomatoes
Everyone knows that summer is prime time for fresh, vine-ripe tomatoes! This seasonal fruit is at its peak flavor and quality during the hot months of mid-to-late summer. So, it was only fair that we should highlight it in our Featured Grilled Cheese for this month.
Fun fact: the color red in the U.S. flag historically stands for hardiness and valor.
The White: Fresh Mozzarella Cheese
Tomatoes and mozzarella are a match made in heaven (think: pizza…caprese salad…the list goes on). This made our choice of cheese obvious for this sandwich recipe. In addition, the fresh mozzarella helps to lighten up the recipe while its mild taste allows the other two elements shine. Together this makes for the ultimate summer comfort food.
Fun fact: the color white in the U.S. flag symbolizes purity and innocence.
The Blue: Homemade Blueberry Balsamic Reduction
The most complex of the three main elements of this sandwich, the homemade balsamic reduction adds a burst of bright, fruity flavor, helped immensely by the addition of fresh blueberries—another one of summer’s specialties.
To prepare: Add blueberries and vinegar to a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low and simmer for 20 minutes, or until volume is reduced by half. Remove from heat, add salt to taste, and set aside to cool.
Fun fact: the color blue in the U.S. flag represents vigilance, perseverance, and justice.
The Finishing Touches
Complete your grilled cheese sandwich with Martin’s Old-Fashioned Real Butter Bread—the perfect vehicle for this classic summer comfort. Add any other desired toppings, then pan fry the sandwich until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melty.
Enjoy!
