Make it a Staycation

July 11, 2016
2 min. read

Vacations can often be pricey and stressful endeavors. With all of the packing, preparation, travel and lodging arrangements, and long drives, they are often more tiring than they are relaxing. This summer, try a “staycation” instead; without ever having to leave home, you can have a fun and restful time while cutting down on many of the expenses.

With a little creativity, there are plenty of ways to have a fun vacation right in your own backyard. And if you’re up for it, you can even plan mini day trips or outings to nearby attractions that are within driving distance and much less effort than a full week-long excursion.

What should I do on my staycation? Good question – To help you get started, we’ve created a resource page with a list of ideas to assist you in planning your staycation(s) this summer. Check it out at https://potatorolls.com/resources/staycation. Read on for a sneak peek at some of the ideas!

Backyard Camping

Tent

As long as you have a tent and a yard, this could be your dream “staycation!” (And even if you don’t have a big enough backyard, you can likely find a nearby campground to set up your tent). By camping out in your own yard, you can minimize many of the travel and rental expenses; plus – you have a real bathroom and kitchen mere feet away if you need them!

Here are some ideas for your Backyard Camping adventure:

  • Pack just like you would for a regular camping trip: tent, sleeping bags, flashlight, backpack, food, binoculars, compass, etc. (Try to forget you’re still at home)
  • Plan a backyard scavenger/treasure hunt or bingo and try to locate various nature items.
  • Take a hike around your neighborhood, using a map and compass to chart out your course.
  • Spend quality time around the campfire, roasting hot dogs and marshmallows, making mountain pies, telling ghost stories, or stargazing.
