Who is “Big Marty”?

If you’ve ever tried Martin’s large, sesame-seeded, white roll, you may have wondered how it got its name. Well, “Big Marty’s” Rolls are named after Lloyd H. Martin, co-founder of Martin’s Famous Pastry Shoppe and father to current president, Jim Martin. Lloyd was given the nickname “Marty” by some of his friends, and since he enjoyed large sandwiches, it only made sense to name the product after him!

“Big Marty’s” Rolls are indeed perfect for “big” sandwiches. The largest of our retail roll products, with the same soft yet stable structure, Big Marty’s Rolls hold up to even the largest burgers and overstuffed sandwiches.

Did You Know?

  • Martin’s “Big Marty’s” Rolls are also used at celebrity chef Bobby Flay’s burger restaurant: Bobby’s Burger Palace!

  • “Big Marty’s” Rolls are always very recognizable in restaurant and dining settings because of the amount of seeds on the roll. Martin’s current president, Jim Martin, says, “The amount of sesame seeds we use provides a nice, hearty presentation and also enhances the taste and texture of the roll, especially when toasted”…and we agree!
  • Martin's Family Restaurant - MenuThis “famous” product has been popular since the early years of our business. As you can see from the picture, it was the burger bun of choice for the “Big Marty Burger” on the menu of Martin’s Family Restaurant, the restaurant the Martin family ran from 1968-1986!

All About Lloyd (a.k.a. “Marty”)

With a constant smile on his face and an infectious, booming laugh, one couldn’t help but love being around Lloyd. He made the bakery a fun place to work and would light up any room he entered. It was not unusual for him to walk around the hallways at work singing songs! Lloyd Martin was a very sincere person, much loved by his family, friends, and coworkers. He strongly believed in the importance of family, and that meals were a time for family celebration—that families should gather around the table and thoroughly enjoy each other’s company.

While Lloyd is no longer with us today, we love having these memories of him to share, and having a very special product to remember him by.

You can learn more about Lloyd, his wife Lois, and the rest of the Martin family by visiting https://potatorolls.com/about/heritage or by scheduling a tour at our visitor center: The Golden Roll.
