Since my last update, I’ve been through quite the temperature shock. For those of you fortunate enough to live in warmer climates and who may not be aware, it’s been rather sub-artic here in Pennsylvania. You know it’s bad when 25 degrees Fahrenheit feels warm. So needless to say I was bound to the gym this past week.
Running Struggles
For some reason, both of my weekday runs were a struggle. Tuesday, I not only forgot my headphones, but I made the mistake of running three miles in brand new sneakers (my feet were not happy about that one). Thursday was slightly more successful, but still not ideal. One of the things I’ve learned so far about my running is that I’m very stuck to my natural pace. Despite getting in better shape I struggle to push myself to run faster for long distances. I can sprint, just not maintain a faster speed for more than a minute. Thursday, I managed to increase the treadmill speed by .1 mph every two minutes all the way to three miles. I’m hoping that consistently increasing the speed on the treadmill will help me improve upon this.

How to Run Long on the Treadmill Without Losing your Mind
South Beach
Friday morning, I left very chilly 1 degree weather to head down to South Beach, Florida for the South Beach Wine and Food Festival. While it was abnormally chilly in South Beach (about 60 degrees) it was definitely a welcomed temperature increase from home.
Rooftop Pool > Running
I was motivated enough to bring workout clothes to South Beach (despite only having about 24 hours there) and I told myself I would make time to run my five miles for the weekend. However, the rooftop pool proved to be too much of a temptation so I ended up relaxing in the pool instead of running. Thankfully, during the day on Saturday, I got quite a bit of walking in; I walked 1.5 miles to the event, all around the event, and then the 1.5 miles back.
Something is better than nothing
My coworker and I caught a red-eye flight back to PA Saturday night, and because of the snow storm that hit the East Coast I didn’t end up getting back to my house until 4:30am Sunday. Needless to say I wasn’t too motivated to go out and run five miles. Rather, than not doing anything altogether I convinced myself for a change of pace and I went to the gym and stationary biked for five miles. Not quite the same cardio level as running five miles, but at least it was something.
This week, the forecast looks like I will be stuck inside for my weekday runs. I cannot wait until it starts warming up. Is anyone else ready for spring?
