New Year, New You

Happy (almost) New Year!

The new year is a time for change, for new beginnings. Who are you striving to become? What does the best version of yourself look like?

Resolutions can often be frightening concepts. What if I fail? The truth is, we all fall short at times but persistence and dedication help us to achieve the impossible (or seemingly impossible).

Here are some tips for setting a New Year’s Resolution you can feel confident in achieving:

1. Make it measurable.

Without a way to measure your progress, you can’t make adjustments in your strategy. Choose a resolution that is very specific to what you are trying to achieve (e.g., I resolve to lose 20 lbs. by the end of the year).

2. Set short-term goals that make up your long-term goal

Long-term goals can be scary because it feels like there is so much room for failure. Setting up little checkpoints along the way can help you to stay on track and make it easier to measure your success. For the goal in #1, this could be something like “I resolve to lose 2 lbs. each month through the end of the year.”

3. Have a close friend or loved one help you along the way

Encouragement goes a long way. Having someone check in to see how you are doing with your resolution can help motivate you to stay on track. Even better would be finding a “resolution buddy” who is working toward a similar goal as you. When you can share your successes and failures with someone, you may work harder to improve.

4. Use a tool to help you track your progress

Whether it’s a smart phone app or just a journal, having something to show you how far you’ve come can help immensely.
Try a goal-tracking app like Lift or some of the ones listed here.

Here are some specific fitness-related apps that might help you measure your success:

  • MyFitnessPal: easy-to-use calorie counting and weight tracking app
  • FitBit: daily tracker for activity, exercise, food, weight, and sleep
  • UP by Jawbone: helps track things like your activity, diet, and sleep
  • Map My Run: helps you find a route in your area that matches the criteria you set
  • RunKeeper: tracks your workout and helps motivate you to reach your goal
5. Keep the end result in mind

Visualize your “new self” at the finish line. Remembering why you set your goal in the first place and staying positive throughout your journey can help you stay on track. Think about how proud you will feel once you are at your new weight, fitness level, or standard of health.
