Happy Birthday, USA! Today marks the 240th anniversary of our country’s independence. On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress voted to adopt the Declaration of Independence, which proclaimed independence from Britain’s rule and marked a turning point in the American Revolution. Today, many Americans celebrate our freedom on this day by getting together with friends and family, hosting picnics or cookouts, attending parades, setting off fireworks, flying the national flag, and listening to The Star-Spangled Banner (the National Anthem).
